The Power of a Mastermind

The first thought that came to mind was, “What the hell am I doing here?

Inside the Arizona headquarters of one of the leading companies in the country (Infusionsoft), I sat with 20-plus internet entrepreneurs sharing best secrets and advice for internet marketing. The internet gurus came from Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom and a few from good ole USA and their ages ranged from early-twenties to late-forties. What was unique about this group was their ability to earn money on the internet; a few were multi-millionaires before the age of 25.

My mind was spinning at the ideas and concepts that were generously shared by the internet gurus. It quickly became apparent that my knowledge of internet marketing was next to nothing, but I was in the right place to make a change. I left the 2 ½ day meeting full of new ideas that I planned to implement for my law firm and new relationships with some of the top internet marketers anywhere.

When I got home, I rushed to tell my wife about the new ideas and concepts and within seconds, she stopped to ask, “How much did this cost?” When told that the cost was “only $10k”, an expression of shock and disbelief came upon her face. I responded the only way I knew how, “I can’t think of a better use of our money.”

A Crazy Thought for Lawyers

After the mastermind meeting in Arizona, a thought occurred to me, “Why isn’t everyone doing this?” Why aren’t lawyers joining with other elite lawyers to share best practices, dissect their biggest challenges and hold each other accountable? Because most lawyers think they know everything…and that is a huge mistake.

Fast forward to 2 years ago, I had lunch with Peter Shankman, the top public relations expert in the country, in Manhattan. Peter shared my belief that all business owners should be in masterminds and told me about his one-day mastermind, “ShankMinds”, where small business owners meet to create customized solutions to their biggest challenges and form new relationships that last long after the event.

This is where the idea for the Mastermind Experience began. Heisting Peter Shankman’s idea, I thought about sharing the mastermind experience with some of the elite lawyers in the country and creating a learning environment that could not be matched anywhere.

3 Ways that the Mastermind Experience is Completely Unique

I have been in masterminds before and they had their share of drawbacks. Most masterminds have way too many members, cost a fortune, require a lot of travel, suck too much time away from the office and regurgitate the same information. The Mastermind Experience was designed to fix those problems.

Difference #1: Only 15 Lawyers Allowed!

The Mastermind Experience is limited to only 15 lawyers. Most masterminds have more than 30 members (some have 50 members), and do not provide enough time or value for the individual members. 15 members is the perfect number for giving individual time and attention in a collaborative environment.

Difference #2: Just 1 Day Away from the Office

The Mastermind Experience is only 1 day away from the office. You can fly in and out in one day. If you don’t have one day to devote to building your firm, you are not serious about running a business.

The Mastermind Experience is held at beautiful venues: San Diego and West Palm Beach in the winter, Chicago in the fall and we hope to add Boston in the summer. You can bring a staff member at no extra fee and the members have a lot of fun too.

Difference #3: Reasonable Fee with a Flow of New Content

The Mastermind Experience has a reasonable cost ($799) and has a mix of new and returning (“alumni”) members. There is a continual flow of new ideas at each mastermind due to the new members. At each mastermind, there are new guest speakers with cutting edge tips for marketing and management.

The Mastermind Experience brings together some of the top achieving lawyers in the country. The members share their best advice and form relationships that last long after the event. The members hold each other accountable and kick ass when they have to. This is why several of our members (“alumni”) return for every mastermind.

An “Extremely Powerful” Mastermind

Here’s what mastermind member, Jim Hacking, Esq., had to say about the Mastermind Experience:

Jim Rohn used to say that you are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with. Spending time with Negative Nellies and old sourpusses does little to help us get mindset right. Conversely, if you spend a lot of time with winners, with people striving for success and with people who can teach you a thing or two, you will probably begin to engage in more winning, more striving and more learning.

Yesterday [October 6, 2016], I had the pleasure of spending the day with 14 other lawyers who “get it”. My friend, John Fisher, assembled us together in Chicago for a mastermind meeting.

Each participant was asked to bring their most vexing law firm marketing or management problem to the room and to share on that. Group members then used their collective brainpower to help develop strategies and solutions to these problems.

This is a mastermind and the one yesterday was extremely powerful.

An amazing thing happens when you open up to virtual strangers about some frustration or big problem that you are facing. By admitting out loud the nature of the problem, it gives it definition and takes away some of the power that the problem may have had over you.

But more than that, having group members chime in with real world advice and practical tips is invaluable. You also get to see that you are not the only one with issues to overcome.

Spending a full day with winners charged my battery and I walked away from tons of practical, real world solutions not only to issues that I am facing, but also to issues I was not even aware of.

John Fisher—you said your goal was to have the highest quality mastermind group for lawyers and I believe you nailed it. Fantastic content, reasonable price, super smart folks, A++.
